How to Take Self Portraits & Edit in Lightroom

Hey party people!

Today I am showing you how to do the thing that got me into photography in the first place: self portraits. I started taking self portraits for my fashion blog, The Bohemian Dreamer, four years ago. I had my tripod and camera in my car at all times and was always keeping my eye out for new locations. This is still how I shoot a lot of my outfit pictures! Self portraits can be one of the best ways to learn how to use your camera and how to pose without the pressure of having other people around.

Equipment Used: Nikon D3100 Nikon 35mm 1.8 lens

^ I would recommend getting these used if you want a deal! Neewer Remote Shutter Tripod (this one is good for holding a camera, but not for video panning) LXC Presets

The steps are pretty simple. Just find a nice location, I usually go for an interesting background or a simple texture like brick, stone, or a tall shrub. Set up your camera on your tripod, plug in your remote shutter, and take as many pictures as you can!

Posing Tips: 1. Move around. A lot. The more angles you try, the more likely it is that you'll get a good shot! At this point, I know a few of the angles that always work for me, but I am always trying out new things. You never know how it looks until you try! 2. Interact with your surroundings. This makes for a more interesting photo and tells more of a story. 3. Vary your distance from the camera. With this lens, I can shoot at an aperture of 1.8, which creates a blurry background (also know as a shallow depth of field). The closer I am to the camera, the more apparent this is. 4. Change up your tripod set-up. For this shoot I repositioned my tripod a few times to get different angles. It also helps to have a mix of portrait and landscape oriented photos in your set.
